Interpreter Services partnered with the Turner Senior Resource Center (TSRC) to start a new wellness program for Spanish elderly in our community. The program’s name is “La Tertulia” (The Chatting) and it was created to be a social and educational gathering time for Spanish speaking seniors.
How did this idea come about? In my experience interpreting for elderly patients, I noticed that a common distress was that Spanish elderly feel isolated at home due to cultural differences, lack of friendships, and a language barrier. La Tertulia will be a time for Spanish-speaking elderly to gather socially as well as a time to connect with their community, to learn about different topics and to have fun. My role in these meetings is to interpret for the TSRC staff and for other people that want to contribute with information for Spanish elderly. Our first meeting on May 16th was excellent! We had 8 participants and they all expressed that they want to be independent and that the gathering was like therapy for them.
We will continue to meet at the Turner Senior Resource Center located at 2401 Plymouth Road, Suite C, Ann Arbor, MI 48105 on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 3pm to 4:30pm. Our next meeting will be on June 20th from 3pm to 4:30pm and the talk will be about Festivities Days in Hispanic countries. If you happen to know someone that can benefit from this meeting pass the words, please.
